Tik Tok, a look at the mobile application taking the world by storm.

It’s no hidden secret that we like things that look better and the truth is Tik Tok is one of those things that “looks better” and more importantly, helps users make themselves look better.

Let’s take a look at how exactly Tik Tok achieves this.

Upon entering the Tik Tok studio, users are faced with several effects at their fingertips with both a bottom and side navigation bar. With so many options, Tik Tok users truly feel like content creators. In the effects bar, the juxtaposition of bright colors against a white and black base exude a feeling of creativity, giving users the feeling that they’re not just using an app, but partaking in a creative process. Some effects also display a cartoonish illustration to indicate their functionality as cartoons are often used in design as a way to reduce stress, decrease the seriousness, or increase the playfulness of a feature.

Each effect can be previewed within its small circle frame, a feature that offers users the necessary visibility into what his or her video might look like once the effect is applied. Once an effect is applied, the portion of the video where the effect is being used is highlighted on the frame in a different color, affording users with a visual of how he or she is actively changing their video. The studio also has over 40 filters, catered to every imaginable purpose such as portraits, landscapes, foods and even “vibes” thereby giving users the ability to make their content look better no matter the context and lighting. Finally, Tik Tok masters the art of piecing different videos together, allowing users to record content on top of content within the same session. It allows users to easily adjust different videos, reorder them, insert transitions and more. Tik Tok enables all of this functionality without users ever having to exit the navigation flow of the application, hence keeping users on the app for all their editing needs.

All in all, the use of colors, illustrations, affordances, and visuals in the studio combined with a massive library of effects in the first place, provide users with a sense of aesthetic satisfaction and ultimate flexibility and control.

Tik Tok has essentially become a “one stop mobile app” for all of a user’s video editing needs. As people, we like looking at pretty things, and Tik Tok is helping users make pretty things — and doing a pretty good job of it.
